Lamborghini: Company History, Current Models, Interesting Facts ...

Lamborghini (officially known as Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A.) is one of the most well-known manufacturers of luxury sports cars in the world. They are also one of the most successful. The company was founded in Italy in 1963 and is currently run by a subsidiary brand of the Audi division of the Volkswagen Group. Two Lamborghini automobiles are currently available for purchase. These are the Lamborghini Aventador and the Lamborghini Huracan.

Company History

Lamborghini was founded in 1963 by Ferruccio Lamborghini, an Italian manufacturing magnate, to compete with established high-performance sports car manufacturers such as Ferrari.

The company quickly gained worldwide acclaim for its production Miura sports coupe. The car featured a rear mid-engine, rear wheel drive setup. This layout soon became standard for high-performance cars of the era.

Lamborghini did not get a slow start like some auto companies. Instead, it exploded in popularity almost immediately. Its sales grew rapidly during its first decade in business. This allowed the company to expand its product line and fine tune its current technologies.

But few automobile companies got through 1973 entirely unscathed, Lamborghini included. Their sales greatly suffered during the oil crisis and worldwide financial downturn of this year. In fact, Lamborghini’s ownership changed three times during 1973 alone. The next couple of years were equally rough and ended with a bankruptcy in 1978.

The American Chrysler Corporation took control of Lamborghini in 1987 but sold it to Mycom Setdco, an investment group based out of Malaysia, in 1994. This group then sold the brand to the Volkswagen Group in 1998. Lamborghini has remained under the control of Audi, a division of the Volkswagen Group, since then.

Lamborghini’s history since becoming a part of the Volkswagen Group has contained as many ups and downs as its early history. Periods of success has allowed them to develop new products and model lines while periods of poor performance (such as during the worldwide financial crisis) has caused sales to drop greatly.

Today, Lamborghini focuses all of its attention on producing sports cars and V12 engines that are used for offshore powerboat racing. One of Lamborghini’s two current car models, the Aventador, uses a V12 engine as well.

Flagship Model

Lamborghini’s current flagship model is the Lamborghini Huracan. The sports car was first introduced in 2014 and was designed to replace the Gallardo as Lamborghini’s sales leader and most produced car.

The Huracan derives its name from the Spanish word for Huracan. Like other Lamborghini car models, the name is inspired by a Spanish fighting bull. Huracan is a legendary bull that was known for its courage during its fights in 1879.

As the successor to the Gallardo, there are several major changes that make the Huracan stick out from the previous Lamborghini model. These include LED illumination, a 12.3-inch color TFT instrument panel, Fine Nappa leather, Alcantara interior upholstery, a redesigned dashboard, direct and indirect gasoline injections, engine stop and start technology, a 7-speed dual clutch transmission with three modes (STRADA, SPORT, and CORSA), 20-inch wheels, a carbon-ceramic brake system, and electromagnetic damper control.

The flagship Huracan uses the same 5.2-Liter naturally aspirated V10 engine as the Gallardo. The car is mid-engined to maintain balance and performance. The top speed for the Huracan is over 200 miles per hour and it can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds.

A special version of the Lamborghini Huracan is specially produced for the Italian State Police.

Current Models

In addition to the Huracan, Lamborghini produces one other current model. This is the Lamborghini Aventador.

The Aventador is a mid-engined sports car that was introduced by the company in 2011. At the time of its release, it was the brand’s newest flagship model, replacing the legendary Murcielago.

Previous Models

Lamborghini has produced countless high-performance sports cars over the years starting with its first year as a company in 1963. However, some of their cars have made a bigger mark on history than others. Two of the most well known are discussed below.

Lamborghini Gallardo: The Gallardo is a sports car that was produced by Lamborghini from 2003 until 2013. It is the company’s best-selling model of all time. Over 14,000 units have been produced.

Lamborghini Murcielago: The Murcielago is a sports car that was produced by Lamborghini from 2001 to 2010. It was the brand’s first new model developed under ownership of the Volkswagen Group.

Interesting Facts

Lamborghini has developed a number of concept and prototype vehicles over the years. Of these, the Lamborghini Asterion is the most recent.

The Asterion is Lamborghini’s first hybrid concept car. It utilizes the same 5.2-Liter V10 engine as the Huracan but combines it with one electric motor mounted on the transaxle and two on the front axle. The gasoline engine produces 607 horsepower and the three electric motors an additional 300 horsepower. This gives the Asterion 907 horsepower total and a 0 to 60 mph time of just over three seconds as well as a claimed top speed of 185 mph.
