Lancia Automobiles S.p.A. is a successful automobile manufacturer based out of Italy. The company was founded in 1906 and became a part of the Fiat Group in 1969. Lancia’s strong heritage in rally racing, as well as its noted use of Greek letters for its model names, have contributed greatly to the brand’s popularity. As of 2014, Lancia model cars are only available for sale in Italy.
Lancia has a long and impressive history as an automobile company. It was founded in 1906 in Turin, Italy by Fiat racing drivers Vincenzo Lancia and Claudio Fogolin. At the time, the company went by the name of Lancia & Co.
The first automobile produced by Lancia was dubbed the Tipo 51. It also went by the name of the 12 HP and was later called the Alfa. This car was manufactured by the company from 1907 to 1908. It’s small four-cylinder engine could produce 28 horsepower.
In 1915, Lancia added a new model to their lineup with a truck called the Jota. The truck caught on much better than the Tipo 51 and a line of Jota trucks soon followed.
Though Lancia never achieved the world wide renown that other car companies of the time have, they are well respected in the industry for making a number of important automotive innovations during their history. These include the first production car in Europe to come stop with a complete electrical system, the first production car with a monocoque-type body, the first production car with a five-speed gearbox, the first full-production V6 engine, and the first company to use independent suspension in a production car.
Despite Lancia’s initial success, they hit hard times during the late 1960s. They accepted a take-over bid by Fiat in 1969 to avoid losing anymore money. However, this was not the end of the Lancia brand as Fiat continued to produce new models under this name. These included the Stratos, Gamma, and Beta during the 1970s.
The 1970s and 1980s proved to be good decades for Lancia. It was in these years that they achieved great success in rally racing. In fact, they won several World Rally Championships.
Today, the Lancia brand is 100% controlled by Fiat Group Automobiles S.p.A. Beginnings in 2014, no more Lancia models were produced and sold outside of Italy.
Lancia’s current flagship model is the Lancia Thema. It is a full-size luxury car and is sold as the Chrysler 300 in all other markets except Italy.
The Chrysler 300 was introduced in 2003 at the New York Auto Show as a concept car. It wasn’t sold as the Lancia Thema until 2011. While it was initially branded as the Thema in countries throughout Europe, it has been sold solely in Italy since 2014.
The Lancia Thema takes a luxurious approach to a sedan style car. The model includes bi-xenon HID projector headlights, LED daytime running strips, new LED taillights, and a horizontally slotted front grille. Thinner roof pillars, a raked windshield, a dual-pane panoramic windshield, and an all-new instrument panel are some additional features that help the Thema stick out from the pack.
The Chrysler 300 is currently in its second generation. The current flagship Lancia Thema is based off of this model.
Lancia currently produces four different models of cars. These include the Lancia Ypsilon, Lancia Delta, Lanica Thema, and Lancia Voyager.
Lancia Ypsilon: The Ypsilon is a supermini car produced by Lancia since 2011. It is based of off the Fiat 500 platform.
Lancia Delta: The Delta is a small family car produced by Lancia since 2009. It is based off of a stretched version of the Fiat C-Platform.
Lancia Thema: The Thema is an executive car produced by Lancia since 2011. It is a re-branded version of the second-generation Chrysler 300. It is Lancia’s current flagship model.
Lancia Voyager: The Voyager is a large MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) produced by Lancia since 2011. It is based on the Chrysler Town & Country model car.
Lancia has produced a wide variety of models of cars over the years. They have a long tradition of manufacturing passenger, touring, sports, and racing cars.
The company is known to emphasize quality, appearance, and design at the expense of power and competitive pricing. However, this has led to the creation of some extremely beautiful and desirable models such as the Lancia Zagato. The Lancia Aurelia and Lancia Stratos are two other discontinued models that made a big impact on the car industry.
Lancia has also spent time developing several concept cars over the years. The most well known of these include the Stratos Zero, the Hit, and the Bertone Kaya.
Lancia was contracted to make a limousine for the President of Italy in 1957. This was the first limo the company ever produced and it was dubbed the Lancia Florida.
