Lada is a successful automobile manufacturer based out of Russia. The company got its start in 1966 and originally spent most of their energies on exporting models under the Zhiguli name. Though Lada cars are still popular in many countries today, they were especially popular in Russia and Eastern Europe during the last two decades of the Soviet era. They were seen as symbols of city life during this time. Lada produces five primary models of vehicles today. They are owned by the Russian automaker AvtoVAZ.

Company History

Lada got its start as a car company in 1966. During their early years, they were the chief export brand for Zhiguli model cars. They focused all of their attention on the domestic Soviet market during these years.

The Lada name became well known in Eastern Europe, particularly in former Soviet bloc countries, during the last two decades of the Soviet era. The brand became a symbol of city life in many of these areas.

Lada didn’t expand to Western Europe until the 1980s. When they did, they started by selling large volumes of the VAZ-2101 model car. The car was an economy model based of off the Fiat 124. Lada also sold other similar economy cars during these years although none sold as well as the VAZ-2101.

It was also during the 1980s that Lada became known in countries outside of Europe, particularly Canada. The company started to export one of their most popular models, the Lada Classic sedan/estate, to North America among other countries. The car was popular because of its competitive price, reliability, and simplicity. It was a very functional car that DIY mechanics could work on without too much hassle. The car was badged with several different names including Rivas in the United Kingdom, the Signet in Canada, and the Nova in Germany.

Lada was particularly important to the Soviet Union in more ways than one. Their cars were actually used in barter agreements in some countries. An example is that Lada traded cars to the United Kingdom for large quantities of Coca-Cola. More than 60% of the company’s cars were exported during these years. Many countries in Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean used Lada cars as police cars and taxis during the late 1980s and early 1990s because of their price and durability.

Today, Lada is owned by AvtoVAZ, a Russian car manufacturer that was started with Fiat in the 1960s. There are currently a number of Lada vehicles on the market and the brand plans to build more in the near future.

Flagship Model

The Lada Largus is the company’s current flagship model. It is a compact car built by AvtoVAZ and sold under the Lada brand name and logo. The Largus has been in production since 2012.

The Largus was introduced as an affordable and roomy addition to Lada’s current compact line. Similar models offered by the company are much smaller and have a much higher price. The Largus was actually developed as a joint project between AvtoVAZ and Renault-Nissan. Its development and release is part of a larger overall plan to produce five models based on the platform in the next couple of years.

The Lada Largus boasts a number of features that help it stand out from the pack. These include air conditioning, anti-lock braking, frontal airbags, the option of five or seven seats, hands-free Bluetooth, and an MP3 player. The Largus can currently be purchased in one of two versions. These are as a passenger station wagon or a high-capacity panel van.
