Honda Manufacturer Overview

Honda Motor Co

Honda is one of the largest corporations currently operating out of Japan. The company was founded in 1946 and currently keeps its headquarters in Tokyo. They produce a wide range of products. The most popular and best selling include automobiles, motorcycles, and power equipment. In fact, Honda has been the second largest Japanese automaker since 2001 and the world’s leading motorcycle manufacturer since 1959. They are currently the eighth largest automaker in the world.

Company History

Soichiro Honda founded Honda in 1946. As a young man, he worked as a mechanic at a garage where he tuned cars that were used in various races around Japan. In 1937, he started to develop a line of piston rings. Shortly after, he won a contract to provide the piston rings to Toyota. After a few initial setbacks, he was able to produce a successful line of mass-produced piston rings for Toyota.

Honda itself was not created until after World War II. In 1946, Soichiro Honda began to develop improvised motorcycle bicycles. These devices used 50 cc two-stroke engines. The engines were initially taken from a surplus of radio generator engines used in the war. When these ran out, Honda began to develop its own 50 cc engines. The initial engine model was known as the Honda Model A.

The Honda Model D, released in 1949, was the first complete motorcycle the company ever built. It was often marketed as the Honda Dream. This motorcycle spurred a period of extremely quick growth within the company. In less than twenty years, they jumped from a small-time producer of motorcycles to the world’s leading motorcycle manufacturer. They have remained at the top of the motorcycle industry since 1964.

Their success in the motorcycle industry allowed Honda to produce their first automobile. Known as the T360, this mini pickup truck went on sale in 1963. Honda soon followed this up with the release of their S500 sports car in 1963.

Honda spent the next several decades expanding its product line and operations in addition to fine-tuning its current offerings. It also used this period of time to export its products to countries around the world.

Honda introduced the Acura brand to the American market in 1986. The brand was used to gain ground in the blossoming luxury vehicle market. The company was the first Japanese automaker to create a dedicated luxury brand of cars.

Several other models of cars hit the market in the years that followed. Honda quickly became one of the bestselling carmakers in the world, particularly in Japan and the United States. Honda remains an extremely popular and successful car company to this day.

Flagship Model

The Honda Accord is Honda’s current flagship model automobile. The car is one of the company’s most well known products. It has been on the market since 1976 and is one of the best-selling cars in the United States. The Honda Accord is currently in its ninth-generation.

The flagship ninth-generation Honda Accord falls just short of full-size classification. It comes in as a mid-size car. The Accord uses strut suspension (for the first time since the second-generation). The car was introduced at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It comes in both a sedan and coupe model. Honda also produces a hybrid and plug-in hybrid model of the Accord.

The Honda Accord is available with a number of different powertrains. These include a new direct injected 2.4-Liter 16-Valve four-cylinder engine (with six-speed manual or continuously variable transmission), an updated 3.5-Liter 24-Valve V6 engine (with six-speed manual or automatic transmission), or a hybrid powertrain with a 2.0-Liter Atkinson Cycle gasoline engine combined with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack.

Two special edition “trim levels” are available on the Honda Accord in North America. These include the Accord Sport Sedan and the Accord Touring Sedan. In actuality, the Honda Accord Touring Sedan is the brand’s true flagship model.
