Ford Manufacturer Overview

Ford Motor Company

Headquartered in Dearborn, Michigan (a suburb of Detroit), the Ford Motor Company is the second largest U.S.-based auto manufacturer in the world and the fifth largest in the world. They produce a wide range of different vehicles ranging from family automobiles to commercial vehicles to luxury cars and much more. Forbes Magazine even described Ford as “the most important industrial company in the history of the United States.”

Company History

Ford has a long and very interesting history as an automobile company. The story stars with Henry Ford, the company’s owner and founder. He created his first car company in 1901 before creating the Ford Motor Company in 1903.

The company started small with only a few cars being produced per day. They quickly grew with the advent of the first moving assembly line for automobile production. The efficiency at which Ford could now create automobiles helped them explode in popularity. During the time period between 1908 and 1930, Ford was particularly well known for their Model T car and then their Model A car (the first car with a safety glass windshield).

Ford continued to grow through the 1930s and beyond. They made several key innovations in automobile technology. These included such features as a deep-dish steering wheel, seatbelts, childproof door locks, and even the seatbelt reminder light.

By the 1980s, Ford was one of the most popular car companies in the entire world. Since then, they have produced a wide range of cars, trucks, and SUVs, many of which have received much acclaim.

Flagship Model

Because Ford is such a large company, they actually have several flagship models at any one time. They produce vehicles across such a wide range of types that it is hard to narrow down their flagship model to one particular car.

However, the Ford Mondeo is considered by many to be the company’s current flagship model car. It is a large-sized family car that has been produced in some form since 1992. They have been produced under several different names including the Ford Contour, the Mercury Mystique, and currently as the Ford Fusion in the United States.

The Lincoln division of the Ford Motor Company focuses on selling high-end luxury cars. Their current flagship model is the Lincoln MKS. The car is a full-size luxury sedan that began production in 2008.

Current Models

Ford currently produces a wide array of automobile models under the Ford name and a variety of other names. Cars that Ford currently produces include the subcompact Ford Fiesta, the compact Ford Focus, the mid-size Ford Fusion, the full-size Ford Taurus, the sport compact Fiesta ST, the sport compact Focus ST, and the sports Ford Mustang.
