Chrysler Manufacturer Overview

Chrysler Group

Chrysler Group LLC is a popular automobile manufacturer based out of Michigan, United States. The company is currently the seventh largest automaker in the world. Though Italian automaker Fiat has owned part of the company for some time, it was only in 2014 that they took complete control. Chrysler is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Fiat S.p.A.

Company History

Chrysler’s history as a company dates back to 1925. It was in this year that Walter Chrysler founded the automaker as Chrysler Corporation.

Success was found early on by Chrysler. The company greatly expanded in 1928 by acquiring the Fargo Truck Company as well as the Dodge Brothers Company. They began to sell vehicles under both brands and established two additional ones, Plymouth and DeSoto.

Chrysler remained successful in North America during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, even during the difficult World War II years. They made the big move and expanded overseas into Europe in the early 1960s. Their European division was known as Chrysler Europe.

The 1970s were not as peachy for Chrysler as the preceding decades were. The 1973 oil crisis among other factors hurt the company’s sales. Indeed, they were on the verge of bankruptcy by the time the 1970s drew to a close. Their financial hardship even forced them to retreat from the European market.

Fortunately, Chrysler soon returned to profitability. This is largely thanks to Lee Iacocca, the new CEO of the time, who managed the company throughout most of the 1980s. Chrysler acquired the popular Jeep brand when they purchased American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987.

A merger with the German automaker Daimler-Benz AG in 1998 ended with the formation of DaimlerChrysler. The merger did not go as planned and Chrysler was sold and rebranded Chrysler LLC in 2007. Though they were hit card by the automotive industry crisis of 2008-2011 (even filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization), they were able to bounce back. Chrysler has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Fiat S.p.A. since 2014.

Interesting Facts

As one of the largest automakers in the world, Chrysler has been involved in some interesting things over the years. For example, they have long shown an interest and passion for electric cars. The Dodge EPIC was the first electric vehicle produced by Chrysler. Since its release, they have spent a lot of energy developing a fleet of hybrid, all-electric, compressed natural gas powered, and diesel vehicles.

Chrysler also has an interesting history in industries outside of manufacturing automobiles. In World War II, for instance, they developed military vehicles and airplane engines. They were also involved in building state-of-the-art radars, space boosters, and missiles during and after the Cold War.
