The Chevrolet Tahoe, which has an extremely similar overall design to the GMC Yukon, is a full-size SUV made from General Motors. This vehicle’s name is a reference to Lake Tahoe, a scenic area located in the western United States. The Yukon’s name is derived from that of the territory located in northern Canada. Both of these vehicles had the addition of a 4-door model in 1995 as well as a longer wheelbase. Te Tahoe has received extremely high praise from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for its myriad of safety features and overall design.
Both the Chevrolet Tahoe as well as the GMC Yukon are part of General Motors’ full-size SUV line and there are lengthened wheelbase models available for both. The Tahoe was originally introduced onto the market in 1992, referring to this vehicle as their version of the popular Blazer. These models were initially available only as 2-door models until 1994. In ’95 Chevrolet made the decision to change the Blazer to the Tahoe, which is when they introduced a 4-door version. This vehicle earned the prestigious title of Truck of the Year in 1996 from Motor Trend magazine.
The standard engine that was originally used in the Chevrolet Tahoe was a 5.7 liter LOS small-block V8, though in 1998 a turbocharged 6.5 liter Detroit Diesel V8 became available to the public. The Tahoe 2-door version was released in Mexico in 1995 under the name “Silverado”, and in 1998 there was a 4-door version which became available. This vehicle could be purchased in the standard base line as well as the LS and Luxury LT versions. In other parts of the area, including Venezuela, this vehicle was released in 1993 with 4 wheel-drive only and was called the Chevrolet Grand Blazer.
There were a number of changes made to the Tahoe starting in 1994, including a revised front clip, revised interior design which included a driver side air bag, revised automatic transmission, passenger-side airbag, and improved steering system. In this year an AutoTrac automatic 4-whee-drive option also became available along with second generation air bags and another revision of its transmission. The later 2005 and 2007 model Tahoe vehicles used the GMT900 platform and there was a hybrid version of the Yukon which was released, and it used the GM/Chrysler Advanced Hybrid System 2.
The current and fourth generation 2015 Tahoe had many aspects of its interior and exterior redesigned for a more contemporary look and feel. The hoods as well as the liftgates on these new vehicles are made entirely of aluminum so as to reduce their overall weight. There is also a much more efficient direct-injected EcoTec3 powetrain which is combined with some vastly improved aerodynamics to maximize fuel efficiency for these SUVs. Another new addition to these vehicles as well as many others is the fold-flat second and third-row seats which now come as a standard feature but can also be equipped with a power-folding feature that is optional.
A lot of the appeal of the Chevrolet Tahoe has to do with its extra large size. Even for an SUV, this vehicle has broken some norms with regards to its design. With the growing demand for large SUVs in America as well as other countries all over the world, it is no wonder that this vehicle is now one of GM’s best-selling models. The Tahoe has full-size pickup origins and has received a number of changes and upgrades throughout the years, resulting in a far from perfect and flawed yet very efficient and safe vehicle overall. Those who are looking to buy an SUV would do well to take a close look at this one.
